November, 2001 Starlight Elementary School in Watsonville, California, was recently recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (DOE) as having one of the most outstanding teacher development programs in the country. Starlight, which is one of CREDE's two research and demonstration schools, was named as one of five recipients of the DOE's National Awards Program for Professional Development. The awards were announced November 28, 2001, by U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige. Two schools and three school districts were chosen to received the award, which recognizes professional development programs that substantially improved teacher effectiveness and student learning. Programs that were selected also demonstrated a consistent set of research- and practice-based principles. As a CREDE research and demonstration school, both Starlight and Wai'anae High School in Wai'anae, Hawaii, participate in CREDE's teacher training program and host CREDE researchers who visit, observe and measure the effectiveness of implementing CREDE's Five Standards for Effective Pedagogy in classrooms with diverse student populations. In announcing the awards, Secretary Paige noted, "Using comprehensive research-based strategies and methods to better prepare our teachers for the classroom is a wise investment that will reap huge dividends by improving student performance." |
