• The Bilingual/ESL Programs and Practices Case:
A Video Ethnography of Educational Alternatives for Second Language Learners
Annela Teemant (2003)
This video ethnography captures a typical day of instruction in six
different classrooms serving second language students. Although there
is great variety in how programs are defined and implemented, this case
highlights ESL, bilingual, and mainstream program models in both an elementary
and secondary setting. In addition, it presents the Five Standards for
Effective Pedagogy, developed by CREDE, as the core set of practices used
consistently in classrooms where successful learning takes place for all
students, especially bilingual and bicultural students. This case invites
you to use these representations of programs and literature on effective
practices to reconsider programs and practices in your own schools.

The Adolescent Literacy Case: A
Video Ethnography of Teaching Second Language Students Content Through
Literacy Development
Stefinee Pinnegar, Annela Teemant & Carl Harris (2003)
The case highlights teachers of English, science, social science, and
mathematics who attend to literacy to promote greater academic achievement
in their disciplines. These five different teachers demonstrate how secondary
teachers can position students to become fully literate in comprehending
and producing content-area texts. The students in these classrooms are
either native English or non-native English speaking secondary students.

A Video Ethnography of Bilingual Students'
Literacy Development
Annela Teemant, Stefinee Pinnegar & Ray Graham (2003)
This case allows mainstream teachers to see and hear the accounts of nine
diverse second language learners, their teachers, and families. The case
has seven studies, exploring who second language readers and writers are,
their experiences in and outside of school as well as their efforts to
learn English. This case also allows educators to see, hear, and read
the research, ideas, concerns, and perspectives of more than 50 national
and international experts. For example, in Studies Three and Four, national
experts talk about the cognitive, social, affective, and linguistic needs
of language learners as well as reading, writing, vocabulary and genre.
The four CD-ROM set covers seven studies:
Study One: Literacy needs
Study Two: Who Am I As a Reader and Writer
Study Three: Elementary
Study Four: Secondary
Study Five: Rationale for Collaboration
Study Six: Current Realities
Study Seven: Content-Area Literacy

The Early Childhood Literacy Case:
A Video Ethnography of Balanced Literacy
Approaches for Second Language Students
Stefinee Pinnegar, Annela Teemant & Serena Tyra
The Early Childhood Literacy Case examines how five different teachers
promote the literacy development of second language learners in pre-school
and early elementary classrooms. Across the case, a range of balanced
literacy practices is represented from word level skills to more holistic
approaches to literacy development. A single set of second language literacy
concepts is used to explore each unique study of practice.
This case encourages users to consider literacy practices for second language
learners and reconsider literacy practices from teacher, student, first
language, second language, and pedagogy perspectives. Michael Kamil and
Elizabeth Bernhardt from Stanford University are featured commentators.
