The SIOP Model: Sheltered Instruction for Academic Achievement
is a new professional development video illustrating the Sheltered instruction
Observation Protocol (SIOP)a research-based model of sheltered instruction.
Derived from a CREDE study, the SIOP Model has been shown to effectively
raise achievement levels of English language learners. Filmed in a documentary
style, this video presents each of the SIOP's eight components through
footage from the math, science, and social studies classrooms of six exemplary
teachers at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. The teachers
elaborate on their lessons and SIOP techniques and teacher educators and
researchers describe the theory and research that support the model. The
video is a valuable resource for teacher educators and staff developers.
The SIOP Model: Sheltered Instruction for Academic Achievement is
intended for use in a sustained professional development program. It supports
the book, Making
Content Comprehensible for English Language Learners: The SIOP Model
(Echevarria, Vogt, & Short, 2000), and serves as a companion piece
to Using the SIOP Model: Professional Development Manual for Sheltered
Instruction (Short, Hudec, & Echevarria, forthcoming September
2002).
