History and Methodology

The directory focuses on programs that prepare teachers to specialize in the fields of Bilingual Education, ESL and/or Multicultural Education. It provides profiles of various teacher education programs and how they organize, conceptualize and implement programs to prepare teachers for the challenges of diverse school settings.

Over the past two decades, there have been dramatic increases in the population of language minority students in the U.S. Research on how teacher education programs are responding to this growing diversity has been limited. We have scant information about programs, structures, components, and the focus of curriculum and field experiences required in programs. Little has been done to classify programs and describe various program models. Our goal is to begin to address these issues within this directory.

This directory presents the results of a national survey that was conducted to obtain a broad overview of teacher education programs and their approaches to addressing diversity across the United States. Results of this survey were used to create a typology of program models.
