Barry Rutherford— CREDE Director of Professional Development

Dr. Barry Rutherford has 33 years of experience in public education. He currently serves as Director of Professional Development for CREDE. Prior to that he was a member of a four-person management team at RMC Research's Denver office where he also served as the project director for a national study of parent and community involvement in the middle grades sponsored by the United States Department of Education. His background is in secondary education curriculum and instruction, and includes training in educational research, evaluation, and statistical analysis. He has conducted numerous studies and evaluations on topics in the field of education.

As a Senior Research Associate with RMC and a member of the Region E Technical Assistance Center and the Region 5 Rural Technical Assistance Center, Dr. Rutherford provided technical assistance to clients in a nine state area and served as the state services coordinator in Arizona, Kansas, and Louisiana. He also served as the office Evaluation Specialist. He provided workshops and onsite consultations to SEAs and LEAs on program evaluation, Chapter 1 student assessment, learning and teaching styles, and school and program improvement.

Before coming to RMC, Dr. Rutherford was the assistant principal in a 900-student urban elementary school in Fort Worth, Texas. In that position, he participated in all phases of management, staff evaluation, and staff development activities. Prior to his site based administration experience, Dr. Rutherford served the Fort Worth Independent School District (FWISD) as the Coordinator of Districtwide State and Standardized Testing. He was responsible for administration of the testing program in more than 120 schools and provided inservice on testing issues and the use of test data in instructional accountability.

Dr. Rutherford has been a teacher at the secondary and postsecondary levels and a supervisor of student teachers. He received a B.A. in Education, an M.Ed. in Secondary Education with specialization in Educational Research, and a Ph.D. in Secondary Curriculum and Instruction with emphasis on educational foundations, philosophy, and multicultural education.
