R. Soleste Hilberg is an Education Research Specialist at the Center
for Research on Education, Diversity & Excellence (CREDE) at
the University of California, Santa Cruz, where she earned an MA
in education research in 1998. She was the project manager for a
five-year Native American school/community systemic reform project,
and participated in the Mathematics Research Group of the University
of California All Campus Collaborative on Outreach, Research and
Dissemination (UC ACCORD). In her recent work, she developed the
Standards Performance Continuum, a rubric for assessing teachers'
use of the Standards for Effective Pedagogy, produced and directed
a teaching professional development video, Studies in Native American
Education — Improving Education for Zuni Children, and co-edited
a book on classroom observation measures, Observational Research
in U.S. Classrooms: New Approaches for Understanding Cultural and
Linguistic Diversity. She has taught mathematics to diverse students
in grades seven through twelve in California and Hawaii and has
written extensively on the topic of diversity education.
